Can I take my cat for a walk?

It's common knowledge that dogs love walks — but what about cats? Many cats actually enjoy the exercise and stimulation of being outdoors. Leash training takes patience, but it's absolutely achievable. Here's how to get started.

Get the Right Gear

Never attach a leash directly to your cat's collar. Cats have more sensitive throats than dogs and can easily slip out of or be choked by a collar. A harness is essential for safe, secure walks. Browse our cat accessories collection for harness options.

Choose the Right Cat Harness

There are two main types of cat harnesses: leads (straps around the neck, legs, and back) and vests (which fit like clothing and are more secure for cats that pull or squirm). To size correctly, measure your cat's girth snug against the fur, then add 1–2 inches. You should be able to slip one or two fingers underneath.

Acclimate Your Cat to the Harness

Don't rush this step — it can take days or weeks. Follow this gradual process:

  1. Place the harness near your cat or their toys. Let them sniff and explore it. Reward curiosity with treats.
  2. Drape the harness loosely over your cat without fastening it. Reward calmly.
  3. Put the harness on fully and let your cat roam indoors wearing it for a few minutes. Gradually increase the time over several days.
  4. Once comfortable, attach the leash and let your cat drag it around inside to get used to the weight.
  5. Hold the leash and follow your cat's lead indoors before attempting outside.

Use treats as positive reinforcement at every step. Never rush — impatience will make your cat less receptive.

Go Outside

For the first outdoor trip, give your cat time to explore — smell the grass, investigate plants, take in the surroundings. Start in your yard or just to the end of your street. Scope out the neighborhood first to check for loose dogs or other hazards.

Note: Be mindful of toxic plants like lilies or azaleas in your yard or along your route.

Enjoy Your Walks!

Once your cat is comfortable and enjoying outdoor walks, make it a regular routine. Consistent walk times give your cat something to look forward to, and the exercise supports their overall health.
