Yes! And there's scientific proof. Using an electroencephalogram (EEG), scientists measured canine brain wave activity during sleep — similar to how human brains are measured during a sleep study. Researchers found that dogs' sleep patterns and brain wave activity closely mirror what people experience during sleep, including the yelping, snarling, and even running you might notice.

What Happens to Dogs When They Dream?

When your pup lays their head down to snooze, their brain begins transitioning into deep sleep. It's here that you'll notice more irregular breathing and rapid eye movements (REM) under their eyelids — just like in humans, REM is when actual dreaming takes place.

You may notice involuntary movements or sounds, or even short breath-holds during sleep. This is all normal and not a cause for concern. Make sure your dog has a comfortable dog bed to support quality, uninterrupted sleep.
